2017 LEVIN BROTHERS NEWS
3/5/17 In
just a few days, we hit the
road! The Levin Brothers Band
- Tony, Pete, Erik Lawrence & Jeff
"Siege" Siegel - will be touring
starting this month in South
America, then back to New York
in April and the Northeast U.S. We
began last night in
our own Woodstock back yard.
Good chance to work out the
kinks, revisit a lot of the
material from our album, try
some new music, and say thanks
to our local Woodstock peeps. With four busy musicians, it's
been difficult aligning our
schedules to do this. But
it's a labor of love for us, and
we're all confirmed road-rats!
Along the way, we're going to
record live in Natick, MA and in
Rochester, NY, looking to come
out of it with a live album.
The final
itinerary is just below.
(Hopefully Trump won't institute
a ban on jazz musicians entering
the country before we get back!) You can click on the blue text
to visit the U.S. venues' websites. Hopefully,
one of the shows will in your 'hood. We'll be lookin' for
ya.

Fela Davis of 23db Productions in NYC produced this
video interview of me as part of their
technology in music series. Done in my
Woodstock post-production studio, she got me
rambling on about music, tech tools, and the
Levin Brothers. Pretty cool!
Thanks Fela.
More new
releases I worked on recently. For many musicians I
know, 2016 was a great year for recording. 2017 is off
to a good start. Great to have
been invited to contribute to these
projects. My
discography page is rockin'!
NYC studio vocalist's release of her
long-awaited collection of originals, backed
by an allstar lineup.
An excellent album by vocalist Chrissy
Gardner, recorded last year in Massachusetts
with an all-star band.
Digitally re-mastered from the original 1990
release, this session features Mark Egan,
Danny Gottlieb, Lew Soloff, David
Taylor and Pete Levin.
Folks have been asking about the Monday Night Band project.

This month ...
Saturday,
March 4th, the Levin Brothers 2017 tour begins at The
Rosendale Cafe in Rosendale, NY. Then we head for
South America for a 3-week tour that includes Chile,
Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia and El Salvador. We
return near the end of the month for some gigs in New
York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. U.S. dates alone
in this column. The full itinerary is just above
under "2017 Levin Brothers News."
3/4/17 The 2017 Levin Brothers
Band tour kicks off with a local
Woodstock, NY gig at the
intimate Rosendale Cafe.
Tony and I , along with Erik
Lawrence and Jeff "Siege"
Siegel. We've done this
every tour, started with a local
gig to warm up, get the kinks
out or our set lists, and be
back home in 20 minutes. (No
hotels, no travel expenses!)
Revived a lot of the repertoire
from our album, and tried out
some new, adventurous material
too. Packed house, standing room
only for both sets. Great
way to start a tour.
Thanks to the photographers
whose shots I borrowed below -

Steve Czubara
12/26/16 Got a great group
of players up into the boonies
for the first tracking sessions
for my new solo album.
I've been writing a lot - some
conventional jazz and some
experimental. It's a treat
to lay your charts in front of
great players and see what
happens. I haven't done a
solo album like this in a long
time - band, live in the studio,
no overdubbing. Here's the
first batch of photos, taken by
my daughter Samantha.

12/3/16 Singer/Songwriter
Marc Black's connection with
Woodstock goes back for decades.
Around this time of year, he
comes home to the Bearsville
Theater for one or two shows,
that more often than not turn
into dance parties. Marc
tore the place up on Saturday.
We're going to it again on
January 1st. The band was
missing keyboardist Warren
Bernhardt. Warren is newly
cancer-free, but still hurting from the
chemo. We wish him the
best and look forward to jamming
with him on New Year's Day.
12/2/16 Once again, I was
part of Bill
Edwards' Westchester All-Stars
annual benefit concert for
Wounded Veterans at the
Paramount Theater in Peeksill,
NY. A big turnout to see
this terrific lineup. And once
again, it was a big financial
success.

11/16/16 The Woodstock
area music series "Jazzstock"
kicked off a new season this
past Friday night at an amazing
new venue - the "Senate Garage"
in Kingston. Vocalist Teri
Roiger expanded her usual trio
format to a sextet, being
featured as well as backing her
vocals. Bassist John
Menegon and drummer Tony
Jefferson rounded out the rhythm
section. Up front, Chris
Pasin on trumpet and Eric Person
on sax.
11/5/16 Sometimes, rockin'
out in a packed neighborhood bar
is the most fun. Saturday
night, we did just that -
drummer Rob Wallis' "Rhythm
Method Band." Fronted by
R&B vocalist Curtis Winchester,
the band features guitarist Gil
Parris and sax player Don
Cipriano. And a special
guest, NY Yankees legend Bernie
Williams - who also happens to
be a killin' guitarist!

the Westchester "All-Stars" rock

concert every December in
Peekskill, NY. This video
shoot features Bill and
guitarist Gene Cornish, along
with the band and a roomful of
folks clad in red. (Not my
color, but I needed to blend.)
I even used my Nord C-1 organ

performance at the beautiful '62

lives in this sleepy college
town. He tours
internationally, but has never

enthusiastic sell-out audience.

10/7/16 Reunion of sorts
with guitarist Lou Volpe at
Showmans Jazz Club in New York
City. Lou and I go way
back in the New York studio
scene; we're on each other
albums and have played together
on other artists' projects.
Showmans is a small, vintage
jazz club in Harlem that's been
running continuously since 1942,
and it's still got that
old-school jazz vibe.
Making it even nicer for me,
there's a good Hammond B-3
there, so ... no schlepping!
Also joining Lou were Woodstock
bassist Rich Syracuse and New
York drummer John Cooksey.
10/2/16 Nice local gig
last night in Stone Ridge at
Lydia's Cafe. Jazz
vocalist Kitt Potter fronting a
quartet of me, drummer Tani
Tabbal, and Lydia's
owner/bassist Mark Usvolk.
After a long time in Woodstock,
Kitt had moved down south for a
year or so. Great to have
her back in the 'hood.
9/11/16 Rob Paparozzi and
friends, back in Marlboro, NY at
The Falcon for a Sunday brunch
show. Lee Finkelstein on
drums and George Naha on guitar.
For the 2nd set, we were joined
by Rob's Blues Brothers bandmate
Bobby Harden. The two of
them tore the place up! We were
also joined by my Woodstock
neighbor, vocalist Janice
Hardgrove. Janice and I go
back to the New York City studio
scene of the '70s and '80s.

6/17/16
Spent 3 days in New York
City this week, recording with a band of all-star
alumni of the Gil Evans Orchestra.
Separate from my own "Monday Night Band"
project, this is being produced by Gil's
sons, Noah and Miles. We
recorded several pieces that Gil arranged,
but were rarely or never recorded, as well
as one
of my own compositions, "Subway", a piece I
wrote for the band in 1986. Great New
York brass section behind me there - Shunzo Ohno, Jon
Faddis, Dave Bargeron, Dave Taylor and John Clark.
Off camera to the right - Chris Hunter, Alex Foster,
Gary Smulyan. Made me smile!

Two updates on the weekly
Wednesday night jazz at
Annarella Ristorante in
Saugerties, NY I've been doing:
We've added acclaimed jazz
vocalist Teri Roiger, an it's
now a regular Wednesday night
gig. Veteran bassist John
Menegon (Dewey Redman, David “Fathead”
Newman, Jack DeJohnette, Sheila Jordan) is
on the case. Annarella is
easily among the best Italian
restaurants in the Hudson Valley
- relaxed atmosphere, excellent food,
and it's practically in my back
yard. I'm lovin' it!
No cover charge. (The
Fettucini in Lobster Sauce is to
die!)
7/20/16
I've been doing a jazz duo with bassist John
Menegon (Dewey Redman, David “Fathead”
Newman, Jack DeJohnette, Sheila Jordan) at
an upscale Italian restaurant, Annarella
Ristoranti, practically in my back yard.
Nice relaxed atmosphere and excellent food.
It seems to be turning into a weekly thing.
Not sure how long I can stay with it, but
I'm lovin' it for now!
7/16/16
Back at Brian's Backyard BBQ with one of my
favorite jam bands - Rob Paparozzi and the
Blues Farm All-Stars. Rob, John Tropea
and I were joined by a couple of special
guests; drummer Vito Luizzi, a veteran of
Johnny Winter's band, and the amazing
Vaneese Thomas, who brought the house
down.

The Don Byron tour continued in Marlboro, NY
at The Falcon, easily our favorite Hudson
Valley venue.
6/25/16
Kicked off a 4-city tour with Don Byron and
an all-star group - an eclectic funk & soul
experience. (Only way I can describe
it.) Basically, we do a lot of Junior
Walker material, but anything else is game.
Don on sax, clarinet and vocals, the amazing
Dean Bowman on vocals, Zach Alford on drums,
Scott Petito on bass, and Matt Finck on
guitar. A nice crowd came out to
Helsinki in Hudson, NY, sang along, clapped
and grooved with us.

Rob Paparozzi and The Blues Farm, back for
another Sunday brunch in Marlboro, NY @ The

near capacity crowd that inspired us to kick
it up several notches. Some renditions
of Blues Brothers standards had folks
dancing in the aisles. Nice way to
spend Sunday. Rob on vocals and

Joe Beesmer, who leads the Woodstock-based
band "Uncle Funk" has been having some
medical issues and was short on funds.
So of course, a musical extravaganza was in
order. A great crowd came out for the
10-band lineup at Keegan Ales, our favorite
are watering hole. Bassist Scott
Petito assembled a terrific group to
headline the evening, then named it "The
Inmates" and Photoshopped the band PR photo
below. (The band is better than the
photo!) Vocalists Leslie Ritter and
Amy Fradon, guitarist Mike DeMicco, drummer
Eric Parker, Scott on bass and me on
keyboard. And of course, Joe "Uncle

Kingston, NY @ Alley Cat. Celebrating
her upcoming CD release, this was Roseann
Sureda's first live outing with the backing trio
from the album - bassist Scott Petito and
drummer Peter O'Brien. This is a brand
new, recently opened venue - nice,
comfortable bar. Wishing them well.

Jazz on the Hudson - and BBQ! Good
pickup jazz group fronted by the iconic
Lillie Howard. Me and a few of my
favorite Hudson Valley cats - guitarist Mike
Jackson, saxophonist Rich Maraday, and
drummer Ernie Colon. A couple of
interesting points: Back in the '60s,
Lillie was part of the hit pop duo, "Billy
and Lillie." None of that on this gig
though. Ernie Colon - first time I've
done a gig with him on drums. Ernie is
a killin' conga player, playing on my
"Certified Organic" CD and in the live
quartet.
4/24/16
Vocalist Roseann Sureda and a nice trio
doing the jazz brunch at the New York
Restaurant in Catskill, NY. Rich
Syracuse is on bass, Chris Pasin on trumpet.
Great restaurant with a really nice vibe to
the room and this teriffic Sunday jazz
series that they're doing. Check it
out.

Rob Paparozzi & The Blues Farm All-Stars -
back for a jazz 'n blues brunch at our
favorite venue, The Falcon in Marlboro, NY.
Rob, John Tropea, Lee Finkelstein and me on
the house's Hammond B3.
3/27/16
Jazz brunch at New York Restaurant, a
wonderful new Hudson Valley venue.
Great food, and they have a great jazz
lineup every Sunday. Today was a trio
with virtuoso trumpet player and bassist
John Menegon. (Notice the absence of
hair on the bandstand. This should have been
billed as the "Cleanhead Trio!") Many people sat in with
us. Sometimes that can be a drag, but
today it was great. Great food, nice
folks. Doing this again twice next
month. Looking forward!
3/20/16
Played 3 concerts in Syracuse, NY produced
by CNY Jazz, with
Nigerian/British soul/jazz vocalist
Ona Onabule. Ola is an incredible
composer and vocalist, and a dynamic
performer. Backed by an all-star NYC
quartet doing
mostly pieces from his latest album, it was
a total pleasure. I highly recommend
that you check him out and hear this album.
Along with me, bassist
Ivan Bodley, drummer Joe Goretti and
guitarist Ron Jackson.

Ranchero Cantina in Emerson, New Jersey:
Vocalist Nikki Armstrong assembled an

Eric Udell, Lee Marvin and many others. Photos

Speaking of love ... I love it that I get to
just walk in and play the house organ.

I've been at Mark Dann's Woodstock studio
for the last several days, recording piano
and organ tracks for Kurt Henry's new album,

guitarist. It's going to be a really
nice album.

Native American vocalist Joan Henry's album,
"Uprising." Meanwhile, I've been tracking
keyboards at Mark Dann's Woodstock studio
for Kurt Henry's (no relation to Joan) new

Kurt's a terrific singer/songwriter.

Starting the new year off with a bang: I
joined folk/rock singer Marc Black and his
band for a free dance party/concert at
Woodstock's Bearsville Theater. Great
turnout and a great night of music.
Toward the end, Marc was inviting dancers to
come up on stage - a dangerous move, but
fortunately it wasn't a heavy drinking crowd
and all was well. Woodstock knows how
to party! In the top photo, Don Davis,
Pete, Marc, Amy Fradon, Eric Parker and Mike

right, unfortunately got cut out of
this shot, the only full band shot I could
find from the evening.

Sunday brunch at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY
with Rob Paparozzi & The Blues Farm.
Really eclectic, rather than blues - jazz,
blues, R&B, whatever. And with 3 of
the quartet currently touring with the Blues
Brother Band, you never know when we're
going to launch into one of their signature
tunes. Rob on harmonica and vocals,
John Tropea on guitar, Lee Finkelstein on
drums, and me on Hammond Organ. By the
end of the gig, we had Evan Conway sitting
in on bass, Steve Finkelstein on congas, and
Mike Torsone and I sharing the Hammond.
Lots of fun!

Over 20 performers gathered at the Unitarian
Church in Schenectady, NY for a
tribute/memorial to jazz pianist Lee Shaw.
A near capacity crowd turned out to hear 4
hours of great music, film, images and
stories. A great evening. I
performed in the final group of the evening,
a sextet built on Lee's rhythm section for
over 20 years, bassist Righ Syracuse and
drummer Jeff Siegel. Completing the
group, Chris Pasin on trumpet, Brian

Bill Edwards & The Westchester All-Stars at

the 4th annual concert to benefit Wounded
Veterans organizations. Bill puts in a
tremendous effort to mount this show every
year. An amazing lineup of singers and

house. Performers included Vaneese

Kathy Policastro, Chuck St. Troy, Angel Rissoff, Tom Dudley, Dianne Cricchio, Corrin
Huddleston, Gene
Cornish, Carmine Appice, Rob Wallis, Wayne
Warnecke, Kristen Capolino, Scott Staten, Paul Opalach, an

Don Byron all-stars played to a packed house
at Club Helsinki in Hudson, NY.
Totally eclectic band where things just
happen unexpectedly. We had a great
time. Dean Bowman (Screaming Headless
Torsos) on vocals, Zach Alford (Davie Bowie)
on drums, Scott Petito (The Fugs) on bass,
Matt Finck on guitar and me on organ and
piano. Wish this band could play more
often, but with Don teaching college in
Colorado and Dean Bowman living in Denmark,
it's hard to get us together. Photos

With Don Byron back in town for a couple of
weeks, we put together a couple of impromptu
gigs. Loosely based on Don's Jr.
Walker tribute album, we stretched out and
did a lot of obscure R&B from Walker, Ray
Charles, Marvin Gaye, etc. Seems like
I've been playing with a streak of
"all-star" bands lately; this one included
the amazing Dean Bowman, Zach Alford & Scott
Petito. Nice!

Spending several days in New Jersey at
Kaleidoscope Sound recording an album for
Zhang Ling, a very talented vocalist and
bassist from Beijing, best known for his
association with Chinese rock star Cuijian.
Ling came to New York to do his solo album
with American musicians, including John
Tropea, Lenny White, Tony Jefferson and John
Cariddi. It's mostly Blues, and he's
great at it. (Although with Chinese
lyrics, we're not sure what he's singing
about, but it's probably Blues.) Some

in Kingston to hear dozens of musicians
jamming in tribute to our saxophonist friend
Peter Buettner, who is overwhelmed by
medical bills. I did a set with Erik
Lawrence, Scott Petito and Jeff "Siege"
Siegel, pictured below. Somebody
quipped that "Petito, Levin, Siegel & Lawrence" sounds
like a law firm, which has opened the gates to numerous
jokes - Passing the bar, etc. (Feel free to go on

in with Joe Beesmer, Vito Petrocitto and

her trio was scheduled to perform in a small

would be unable to make the gig, I was asked
to step in, joining her longtime rhythm
section, drummer Jeff "Siege" Siegel
and bassist Rich Syracuse. I learned
several of Lee's original pieces, and we
performed them to a packed house, before
bopping around the corner to the Orpheum
Theater to catch the film. What a
great evening!

York studios all the time, but we hadn't
played together in several years. We
had this mini reunion at Showmans Jazz Club,
one of Harlem's premier old school jazz
clubs and a cultural landmark since the '40s
when it opened next to the Apollo Theater.
It hasn't changed a whole lot - old dusty
wooden walls, long narrow room with a small
stage at one end and a vintage bar running
the whole length of the room. The room
has a great vibe. And, a nice Hammond
B-3 on stage, so ... no shlepping!

The annual Hudson Valley Jazz Festival
finally expanded this year to include
Kingston at ASK - the Arts Society of
Kingston. 3 bands covered the evening,
with me headlining. Basically it was a
trio with bassist Rich Syracuse and drummer
(and honoray Levin Brother) Jeff "Siege"
Siegel. As a special guest, we were
joined by trumpet player Chris Pasin.
Nice evening. Good crowd. Hope
this is a sign that it will continue.
Sure is nice playing festivals in my own
neighborhood!

Jazz clarinetist Don Byron put together an
all-star group for a one-time show doing
music from his CD "Do The Boomerang" - music
of Motown legend Junior Walker. The
set featured the remarkable jazz/blues
vocalist Dean Bowman (of "Screaming Headless
Torsos") along with guitarist Matt
Finck, "Fugs" bassist Scott Petito, David
Bowie drummer Zach Alford, and me on organ
mostly. We were somewhat
under-rehearsed, but sometimes that makes
for the best spontaneous performances - and
this was that. Wonderful night.
With Dean living in Denmark and Don in
Denver, Colorado, it'll be tough getting
this bunch together for an encore, but we're
hoping to give it a try this winter.
Stay tuned ...

Rapidly becoming my favorite pickup jam band
- "The Blues Farm" fronted by
vocalist/harmonica master Rob Paparozzi (who
also currently fronts the Original Blues
Brothers Band). Also on board,
guitarist John Tropea and drummer Jerry
Marotta. (No bass - I'm playing
organ.) The hit was at Brian's
Backyard BBQ in Middletown, NY, a real
old-fashioned road house that features both
Hudson Valley groups and national touring
bands. In the photos, check out the
walls; hundreds of musicians from all walks
have autographed it. Great venue.

Another great Woodstock jazz Wednesday at Catskill
Pizza. Usually I'm a guest with Jeff Siegel's band
here, but this time it was with trumpet player, Chris
Pasin. Lew Scott on bass and Peter O'Brien on
drums. Our friend Lisa Saalfield makes all of
these Wednesday night gigs, and often is the only one to
take photos. This time, we got her to pose for one
with the band.

Sunday jazz brunch at The Falcon, my favorite Hudson
Valley music venue. (Not the least of reasons is that I
just walk in and play their Hammond B-3. No
schlepping!) Erik Lawrence put together this nice
quartet with me, guitarist Matt Finck and drummer Tony
Jefferson. Funny that Erik and I had just played here
with The Levin Brothers Band 2 weeks ago. Scroll
down a bit and you'll see. No suits this time!
6/22/15
I've been playing occasionally with singer/guitarist
Beki Brindle and also playing on the album she's working
on. We just did a shoot for a music video for one
of the songs from the album. Actor Brad Dourif
joined us onstage, portraying a faded rock star.
Lot's of fun - if you don't count playing the same song
60 times over a 5 hour span. (I think I've got it
memorized now.)

The Levin Brothers - Tony & Pete with Erik Lawrence and
Jeff "Siege" Siegel - played to a capacity audience in
Marlboro, NY at The Falcon, one of our favorite Hudson
Valley venues. With Tony's 2015 touring schedule
with King Crimson, this is likely the last Hudson Valley
show we'll be able to do this year. We're working
on our 2016 plans, including another swing through the
Northeast U.S., Europe, Japan, and a new album.
We'll keep you posted. Here's some shots from
Saturday's show.

new ideas. Trumpeter Chris Pasin sat in with us.

Auditorium @ Manhattan School of Music in New York City.
Dozens of musicians and performers joined together for
this joyful celebration of Lew Soloff's life and career.
A superlative trumpet player and my friend for decades,
Lew passed away unexpectedly a few weeks ago. The
lineup of performers and the standing-room-only turnout
underscored how much Lew was loved. The large band
was fundamentally the Gil Evans Orchestra, with many
extra players rotating through the evening. The
show opened with Wynton Marsallis leading a Dixieland
band through the hall in a real-deal New Orleans funeral
scene. (Two photos below) In the photo just below,
the band is playing "Spinning Wheel" with Will Lee doing
the vocal. The 7 trumpet players on stage played
Lew's iconic solo in unison. Pretty crazy!

Another jaz brunch in Marlboro, NY at The Falcon - this
time with a groovin' organ trio featuring guitarist Matt
Finck and drummer Tony Jefferson. As always, an
enjoyable gig for us at this Hudson Valley venue -
especially for me, since I get to just walk in and play
the club's Hammond B-3. Nice extra bonus for Matt
and I as well as the audience when Tony came up front
and scatted a bebop tune; he's a great vocalist as well
as a great drummer. We're doing this again on
Sunday, June 28th, adding Erik Lawrence on sax.

Another nice weekend in Upstate New York at the Public
Theater in Auburn with the Peter Mack Quintet.
Good jazz, good folks, good food ... and a sweet Hammond

The first Levin Brothers Band tour, celebrating its 2014
album release. Tony playing bass & cello, Pete
playing piano and organ, Erik Lawrence on saxes and
flute, and Jeff "Siege" Siegel on drums. The tour
started with a capacity crowd at the Rosendale Cafe -
special for two reasons; it was the band's first gig
ever, and it was in our Hudson Valley back yard.
Sunday night we had a standing-room-only crowd at a
classic music club, The Turning Point in Piermont, NY.
Then we we took off on the road for real, with a swing
through upstate New York. Groovilating New York

2/22/15 Played a nice jazz
brunch at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY - this time with a
powerhouse trio; Matt Finck on guitar and Adam Nussbaum
on drums. Some pretty hard groovin' for a Sunday
morning, but nobody complained. Nasty storm the
night before, but today was sunny and folks came out.
Nice photos by Ed Conway.
2/4/15 Sometimes, the
informal local gigs are the most fun. I joined
Jeff Siegel and Rich Syracuse as this week's guest as
part of their Wednesday night jazz series at Catskill
Pizza in downtown Woodstock. Did a piano trio for
the first set, then guitarist Matt Finck joined us for
the second. I like doing piano trio; makes me work
... and think! Photos: Lisa Saalfield
1/22-25/15 Spent the
weekend at the NAMM show in Anaheim, California.
Tony and I did 8 shows at the NS Design booth, playing
music as a duo from our Levin Brothers album. We were
there in support of the Steinberger basses and cellos
that Tony plays. I had a loaner Electro 4 from the
Nord company. We had a lot of fun playing the
tunes live; first time we've done that. Good
practice for our tour in March. Also, a great
hang. Lots of friends stopped by to say hello and
listen. (See photos below) In a strange
epilog, the "Historic Snowstorm" on the east coast
got our flights cancelled. So we had a few extra
days to hang in the California sunshine. Back to
normal now.

quartet that Rob has named "The Blues Farm." John

current Blues Brothers touring band ... and me.
Even better, we did it to a full house. At 11am
yet! Yikes!
11/21/14 I organized and
led a Gil Evans tribute evening with an 11-piece group
I've named "The Monday Night Band" recalling Gil's long
tenure doing Monday nights at Sweet Basil jazz club in
NYC - long since closed. The players for the gig
are all alumni of the band, mostly from the '70s Sweet
Basil era. Great crowd; great night. We did
a multi-track recording of the evening, as well as a
9-camera shoot. Album and DVD coming in 2015.

10/31/14 - 11/2/14 Spent a
long weekend in Key West, Florida playing with
vocalist/harpist Rob Paparozzi. All 3 nights were
at The Green Parrot, easily the hippest bar in town.
Enthusiastic crowds packed the place every night.
Key West-based guitarist Larry Baeder brought us down,
but it was otherwise a NYC band, groovin' at a level
that usually doesn't happen in Mararitaville! Also
in the band, bassist Eric Udel and drummer Lee
Finkelstein. Making it more fun, Rob, Eric and Lee
are all current members of the touring Blues Brothers
Band. When we did "Soul Man" and "Knock On Wood"
... we did it right! On Saturday, Rob even wore
his Blues Brothers duds.

Castles Made Of Sound; 9 all-star alumni of the Gil

"Monday Night At Sweet Basil" era at The Cutting Room in
NYC. We weren't sure what it would be like; it's

by the music and an enthusiastic New York jazz audience,
it all came back. I terrific night. Hope you
were there. We will do it again. And again!

I subbed the keyboard chair this past weekend with Bill
MacPherson and Nee Sackley and their world-beat band
Native Vibe for a brief tour in New York and
Connecticut. We were joined by Connecticut drummer
John Perigrinelli and Nanny Assis, a dynamic New York
percussionist I've played with over the years. Lots of
infectious African grooves; I'm not knowledgeable about
those, but they wanted jazz solos - and that I can do!
Had an absolute ball playing with them.
8/23/14
Played with Ali Ryerson's quintet in Warwick, NY as part
of the town's Summer Concert Series. We hadn't
played together for several months, so it was a bit of
pressure remembering the ins and outs of the charts; but
we hit our stride and did a nice 2-hour set. Great
crowd - and the threatened rain didn't happen.

Beautiful concert at the Public Theater in Auburn, NY
with bassist Peter Maciulewicz's quartet. Harvey

Jazz brunch at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY with the Erik
Lawrence Quartet. We do these about every month,
but occasionally one of them really rocks. Along
with Erik and guitarist Rob Reich, we were joined by
drummer Ben Perowsky. My bandmate from the Gil
Evans days, Shunzo Ohno, was in the house and joined us
on trumpet. Also, vocalist Janice Hardgrove sat
in. I knew Janice from NYC when we were both doing
lots of jingle dates. We've both migrated upstate
to Woodstock. Small world! Thanks to Ed
Conway for these great photos.

At the Stanhope House in Stanhope, NJ with vocalist Sari

Rob Paparozzi and a Woodstock-based band in Erie, PA at
the Romolo Chocolates Summer Music Festival. It's
a wonderful, free concert series, put on by Tony
Steffanelli and Romolo Chocolates, that's been
going on for years. I played it with an organ trio
in 2012. It mostly features jazz groups - Tony is
a big jazz fan - but they're branching out a bit this
year.

Rocked the house at The Falcon with blues guitarist Beki
Brindle and the band - Frank Ganci on bass and Vito
Luizzi on drums. A real treat to play with Vito,
who's just coming off of years on the road with guitar
legend Johnny Winter. I'll be joining them for
several dates over this summer. These photos are
by James Rice. This is the 2nd time he's taken a
great shot of me from a loft high above the stage.

at The Bearsville Theater in Woodstock with Marc Black's
band - 2-set concert to do a live recording and 6-camera
video shoot. Audience seating, plus a large area
in front of the stage for dancing - and the dance floor
was packed. Marc is a wonderful singer-songwriter
and a dynamic performer. I don't get to play with
him very often; Warren Bernhardt has been his regular
keyboardist for many years. For this outing, Marc
decided to use both of us. Made it even more fun
for me. Still waiting for more photos to surface.

5/21/14 Next week, Tony's
home for a week or so from the Peter Gabriel tour.
So on Tuesday, we're back at Scott Petito's studio to
begin final mixes. Spent a couple of days doing
intense listening and making mix notes. Meanwhile,
today, in a studio in Arizona, Steve Gadd is laying drum
tracks for a couple of our tracks. Not too shabby guest
artist for the album!
Locally, I just signed on for a
sort of residency. With the summer tourist season
starting up, Catskill Mountain Pizza in Woodstock is
doing live music in their back room. Jeff Siegel
(drummer for the Levin Brothers project) has organized a
Wednesday night Jazz series. For a few dates in
June and July, I'll be doing an organ trio there with
guitarist Matt Finck. Matt's a great player.
If you're in the 'hood, definitely stop in for one of
these. No cover, no minimum.
5/17/14 Nice Saturday
night hit in Peekskill, NY at 12 Grapes, a beautiful
restaurant and music venue. John Cariddi (guitar),
Jerry Marotta (drums) and I backing premier harmonica
whiz and vocalist Rob Paparozzi. We grooved!
This was one of the rare gigs where I'm playing organ
bass with Jerry - easily my favorite rock drummer.
Deep pockets!
5/9/14 A nice evening in
concert with bassist Peter Maciuliwicz and drummer
Harvey Sorgen in the newly renovated Theater Mack in
Auburn, NY. I don't get to do piano trios in a
concert setting very often, so I was really laying for
this one. Brought out a few new tunes I hadn't
performed yet, including one that was written for the
upcoming Levin Brothers album project. Full house
- great reception from a wonderful audience.
There's a tentative plan to do it again on August 22nd.
Nothing firm yet. To be continued ...
5/4/14 Played another Jazz
Brunch @ The Falcon in Marlboro, NY - this time with Rob
Paparozzi. Rob is one of the premier Harmonica
players in the New York session scene, and a great
vocalist; he is currently one of the front men with the
Blues Brothers Band. Rob knows how to rock the
house. Also on stage, guitarist John Cariddi and
drummer Lee Falco. Our sedate Jazz session evolved
into a smokin' R&B set as guitarist Paul Pesco sat in
with us. Paul and I were bandmates on an Annie
Lennox tour in the 90's. Hadn't seen him in
several years. What a great reunion!
Paul Pesco (far
right) joins us for the 2nd set
4/25-27/14 Ali
Ryerson Quintet - Tri-State Con Brio tour. 5 gigs
in 4 days. Ali, Mike DeMicco, Mark Egan, Karl
Latham and me. The band was smokin' by the end.
Wish it had gone on longer! (I don't say that very
often!) Most of these pics - by Chris Drukker -
were from our gig at Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair,
NJ. A beautiful, intimate venue - a great place to
hear Jazz.
4/25/14 We're
into the Ali Ryerson Quintet tour, fresh off a great
night at The Falcon in Marlboro. Today, headed for
Old Lyme, Connecticut and the Side Door Jazz Club.
Just got news today: A project I'm launching - The
Gil Evans Legacy Band - is
confirmed for two upcoming dates in August and September
and tentative European tours for next year. Very
excited about this. More news to come.
Meanwhile, take a look at the
band page.
4/23/14 Just finished
2 weeks with many studio hours logged. Editing and
mixing for the Levin Brothers album and for John Clark's
Odd Couple Quintet album. This month, Tony's off
to England for some Peter Gabriel gigs, and I'm about to
take off for a short tour with Ali Ryerson. Next
week, I'll be turning my attention back to my newest
solo album project, now projected to be a November
release. Meanwhile, lighting new fires under the Gil
Evans Legacy band project - a couple of gigs booked.
It's going to be a busy year.
3/30/14 Finally
settling a bit after a string of live gigs
and
lots of driving. This week, getting prepped for a
recording project in NYC with John Clark's Odd Couple
Quintet. Then Tony's will have finished the
Crimson Projekct tour and we'll be back to work on the
Levin Brothers album. Not likely we'll be finish mixing
for a while yet, but with a planned September release,
we've got time. Meanwhile, I've played organ on
some tracks for Beki Brindle's album. She's still
working on it, so it'll be a little while. Beki
rocks! Too be continued ...
3/11/14 Lots going on.
Spent this morning organizing and making plans. I
have 9 gigs this month with various people. Whew!
Without my computers and the GPS, I doubt I could keep
it all straight. What did we do before we had
them?
Caught up for now on the Levin
Brothers project. Tony's traveling in Europe, so I
can push it aside for a bit. When he comes back,
we edit, fix and mix. Still planning on a
September release and thinking toward doin' it live.
Finally getting back to my solo
album, which has been on hold for a couple of months.
Lenny White, Dave Stryker and Rob Paparozzi played some
really great stuff back in January . Time to get
back to it.
Sometime in early April, I'll be
recording with John Clark's Odd Couple Quintet.
Along with other material, we'll be doing his Jazz
arrangements of two of the Mozart Horn Concertos.
A band fronted by French Horn and Bassoon, this is a
truly unique group.
Then, later in April, I'm doing
a 4-day, 5-concert tour with Jazz flutist
Ali
Ryerson. Her "all-star" quintet includes Mike
DeMicco (guitar), Mark Egan (bass) and Karl Latham
(drums).
Yes, I am having fun!
3/8/14 The Gabriel
Butterfield Band rocks the house in Middletown, NY at

the rare good people in the music business.

All You Need Is Love - a celebration of the Beatles
performed by a 13-piece all-star band to a capacity

was conceived and put together by Leslie Ritter, Scott
Petitio, and David Spinozza, who did most of the more
complex arrangements. With the hectic insanity
leading up to the show, nobody thought to properly video

It's not an easy or inexpensive show to mount, but
hopefully we'll get to do it again someplace.

John Clark's Odd Couple Quintet in concert in NYC at the
Dizzy Gillespie Auditorium, Baha'i Center. This
otherwise stock jazz quintet is made unique by the two
players who front the band - John Clark (French Horn)
and Michael Rabinowitz (Bassoon). Both of them
defy the conventional perceived boundaries of their
instruments, and just take it out! For the first
time, we performed John's arrangements of two Mozart
Horn Concertos, all 6 movements. I'm guessing
that's never been done. We'll be recording some
time in April. To be continued ...

Finished the first round of recording
sessions for the first Levin Brothers Band
CD with Tony, a project we've been planning
for months. This week was mainly
focused on recording drums with Jeff "Siege"
Siegel. The schedule got pressured
some when we lost Wednesday to a major snow
& sleet storm, but we're caught up and on
track. It's feeling pretty good. In
two weeks, when Tony's back from England,
we'll be joined by guitarist David Spinozza
and saxophonist Erik Lawrence. Lovin'
this project!

Played a nice Sunday brunch to an enthusiastic crowd at
The High Falls Cafe in High Falls, NY with extraordinary
vocalist Kitt Potter. Two old friend in the rhythm
section, Charlie Kniceley and T. Xiques. And yes,
we did this on Superbowl Sunday! (But were home in
plenty of time for the game.) Making music with
Kitt is always a treat. Photo:

First warmup gig for the Levin Brothers Band project,
just the core trio of Tony, Pete and drummer Jeff
Siegel. We're getting set to start recording in a
few days; guitarist David Spinozza and reedman Erik
Lawrence will join us for there. Just to loosen up
a bit, the core band played at an intimate local venue -
try a couple of the new tunes, get the kinks out, play
some jazz! We were thinking to keep it low-key,
but we got a packed house. Go figure! The
band is inspired by jazz groups from the early 50's, so
we're dressing the part, even if we don't quite sound
like that. Photos are by
Ed Kurys.
12/31/13
Many interesting projects in the works have had me busy
writing, arranging and doing battle with ProTools in my
home studio. Just finished a music track for
activist Jacqui Drechsler for an upcoming video aimed at
reigning in the Indian Point nuclear power plant.
The track is pretty amazing. Mixing it next week.
Then it'll get turned into a music video. I'll
preview it here when we're done.
I'm continuing work
on my next solo album. Next week, hooking up with
Lenny White, Dave Stryker and Rob Paparozzi to play on
it. Still organ-based Jazz, but much more eclectic
than usual Many terrific guest musicians.
In the next few weeks, I'll be recording with French
Hornist John Clark's group, "The Odd Couple Quintet."
John and I were band mates for years in the Gil Evans
Orchestra; he's an amazing player! Also amazing in
this band is Michael Rabinowitz, who plays Jazz Bassoon
like you've never heard. This is gonna be fun!
Meanwhile, I'm
working on a Jazz album with my brother Tony, who's
getting into playing Jazz cello. The project is
inspired by bassist Oscar Pettiford, who we've both
admired since the 50's. (If you don't know ...
Google him!) Many guest musicians lined up.
We'll be recording in January and February.
12/29/13 Jazz
Brunch @ The Falcon in Marlboro, NY with the Erik
Lawrence Quartet - Rob Reich on guitar and Lee Falco on
drums. This has become my favorite venue in the
Hudson Valley. Great vibe. And ... there's a
nice Hammond B-3 waiting for me there. No
shlepping!
12/28/13
Played a fun local gig with guitarist Ted Orr's band,
Blue Food @ Harmony Cafe. Horn section and slammin'
rhythm section that grooves hard. And it's
almost in my backyard, so I'm home in 10 minutes.
Love that!
12/8/13 A Jazz
brunch with bassist Charlie Kniceley in High Falls, NY
turned into an event. We backed a wonderful Jazz
vocalist, Jay Clayton, and legendary tap dancer Brenda
Bufalino. Standing-room-only crowd, peppered with
local celebrities and performers, and 3 or 4
Grammy-winners. Jay charmed the folks.
Brenda knocked 'em dead. Fun gig!
11/24/13
Another Sunday Jazz Brunch at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY
with the Rob Paparozzi Quartet; Rob on harp & vocals,
Rob Reich on guitar, Lee Falco on drums, and me at the
Hammond. Clear, crisp winter day - no snow yet -
good crowd, including some friends I hadn't seen in a
long time. Nice day!.
11/8/13
Nice, laid-back trio gig with vocalist
Ria Curley in the lounge at the Inn At Saratoga -
actually in Saratoga Springs, NY - along with Albany
bassist Bob Kendall. We're doing it again on
Friday the 15th - 7pm-10pm. Good food - kitchen's
open 'til 9. No cover charge.
10/31/13
Groovilatin' and silly getups for Halloween. It's
getting to be the National Holiday around here! I
dug out a blonde wig I wore in a movie shoot back in
2000. Amazing it survived this long. I look
kind of interesting with hair. Haven't had any
since June 1979! Kingston, NY @ Keegan Ales with

Back at the Falcon in Marlboro with the Hugh Brodie
Quartet. Hugh is a legend in the Hudson Valley,
both as a sax player and for his spiritual compositions
and approach to music. Usually my gigs at the
Falcon are on their Hammond B3, but this time I just
used their fine 7-foot grand piano. Nice change
for me. Also in the band - Harvey Sorgen on drums
and the iconic Malcolm Cecil on bass. Even though
we're practically neighbors, this is the first time I've
gotten to play with Malcolm. He's pretty amazing.
We'll be doing some hanging soon.
9/29/13
Played the Jazz Brunch at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY
today with Erik Lawrence, John Cariddi and Lee Falco.
Then Jerry Marotta and I took a run up to Albany to
catch Steve Hackett and the Genesis Revisited Band, then
hung out with Steve and the band afterwards. Nice group
of guys ... and a great band! Turns out Steve's
house sound mixer is an engineer I worked with at Konk
Studio in London back in the 80's. Damned small
world!

Played with the Larry Campbell and the Midnight Ramble
Band at Levon Helm Studio in Woodstock. Great
night of amazing music.

Spent a wonderful day at Dave Cook's Area 52 Studios
recording with a Mamadou Kelly and a group of musicians
from Mali. Some really different stuff for me.

late to learn!

Uncle Funk did a set at Keegan Ales as part of a
fundraiser for the
Healthcare Is A Human Rightorganization in
Kingston. Live music went from 1-11pm, with over a
dozen great bands. Mini-reunion for Uncle Funk,
what with Jesse Gress home after a long Todd Rundgren
tour. We got there at 6:30, played at 7:00, home
by 8:30. Sometimes short gigs are good!

Scott Petito put together an all-star band for a one-nighter
at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock. We did all
covers associated with Woodstock artists, past and
present, and gave them our own twist. As a gag,
Scott had named the band "How the Hippies Saved Physics"
for this one gig. But to our surprise, M.I.T.
professor David Kaiser - author of the book by that same
title - came to the gig and gave a nice talk to the
audience between our sets, explaining where the title
comes from. Very cool guy. Like I've been
saying for years; "No two gigs are alike!"

opened a world-class studio in the Berkshires in Central

Lots going on
this month. The Butterfield experience has a
couple of big hits: Friday, August 16, we're at
The Falcon
in Marlboro, NY. Jimmy Vivino is fronting the
band, which this time out includes both of our
harp/vocalists, Rob Paparozzi & Steve Guyger.
There's no cover charge at The Falcon, but this show
will almost certainly be packed. Reservations
strongly recommended. Then, the next day, the band
is heading for Pennsylvania to play the Philadelphia
Folk Festival. We'll be recording live at both
shows. Meanwhile, the core band will be at
B.B.King's in New York for the annual NY Blues Hall of
Fame bash, where we're all being inducted. How
'bout that! Other gigs this month with Nikki
Armstrong, Rob Paparozzi, Uncle Funk, Scott Petito and
Lindsay Wagner.
Meanwhile, I'm starting work on another solo album
project. I'm going to involve lots of my favorite
players this time out. Sessions starting next
week. More on this as it develops.
Lots going on this month!
7/21/13 Double header
today. (I usually avoid those these days, but had
to go for it this time.) Playing a Jazz brunch
from 12-3 at The Brasserie in Poughkeepsie, NY - piano
trio with bassist Jim Curtin - my bandmate from the
Butterfield band - and drummer Joe Carozza. Then
it's hustle back to Woodstock for a soundcheck with Joe
Beesmer & Uncle Funk, for an 8pm hit at the Bearsville
Theater. Definitely will be two extremes!

7/5/13 Trekked up to
Greenfield in North Central Massachusetts to The Arts
Block, a wonderful arts complex. The concert in
their big venue was with French Hornist John Clark and
his "Odd Couple Quintet." a straight ahead jazz group
that features French Horn and Bassoon as the front line
instruments. Pretty unusual! Bassoonist Michael
Rabinozitz has completely broken the mold on what you'd
expect a bassoon to be capable of doing in a Jazz group.
He's amazing! Also copped a Cleanhead photo-op
with our drummer Abe Fogel (photo in the right hand
columna) and enjoyed working with a terrific young bass
player Marty Jaffee. Great gig.
6/27/13 Full house at the
Bearsville Theater in Woodstock for the Gabriel

his fans came out to hear a mixture of Butterfield and

basically music to relax by. A departure from the

beautiful Alto Flute lines over my bed of electronic
textures. New cover art - actually an idyllic
country pasture that is my back yard. If you look
carefully, you'll see my dog Cocoa relaxing in the sun.

4/16/13 Tony found a lot of photos from the Paul

No idea what we were talking about, or what that bottle
is.
4/16/13 Video shoot today with the Gabriel

For those of you non-New Yorkers who don't know the area
- Woodstock to Long Island means braving the dreaded
Long Island Expressway at rush hour to do this.
That's called, artists suffering for their music!
More on this once we know we've survived. Video
coming!!
I'll be in Boston all this weekend for a big family
gathering - a celebration of Belle Levin's life.
We have cousins coming in from all over the country;
some relatives I haven't seen for years, spouses, kids,
partners I've never met, ladies from Mom's quilting
group coming in from Cape Cod. It's gonna be
great! We'll be doing what the Levin family has
traditionally done for years ... eat! {URP}

2/1/13 Recorded in
April 2012 at The Iridium in NYC, my organ trio was
joined by 3 great horn players, with all of us alumni of
the legendary Gil Evans Orchestra. I dropped most
of our planned setlist and we jammed on pieces
remembered from our time with Gil - especially
significant since 2012 saw many events celebrating Gil's
centennial. It was a fun, spontaneous evening in
the freewheeling spirit of Gil's bands, with dynamic
performances from everybody on stage - Lew Soloff, Alex
Foster, John Clark, Dave Stryker, Adam Nussbaum, and me.
The Iridium recorded it, I remixed it, and .... here it
is!! Physical CD @ CDBaby, digital download

chops (he's currently front man for the Blues Brothers

When he does his own small groups, it's billed as the
"Hudson River Rats" - and it grooves like crazy!
Last night, I was one of the Rats, along with Dave

No rhythm section ... yikes!
Luckily Thierry Arpino and
Tony Levin were available

rehearsal, soundcheck and we
killed it.
3/13/31 Back at The Falcon in
Marlboro, NY for Easter Sunday Jazz brunch with the Erik
Lawrence Quartet. We're doing this once a month
now; it's one of the easiest and pleasurable gigs I do.
(Except for getting up early in the morning.
That's rough!) Along with guitarist Rob Reich and
drummer Lee Falco, we had two people join us on stage,
keyboard player Jeremy Baum and the wonderful Mala
Waldron on piano and vocals. Jeremy and I swapped
off between piano and organ. Lots of fun.
(Unfortunately, no photo of Jeremy.) Next one on Sunday,
April 28th.
3/29/13 Bassist Peter Mack
