10/26  End of the tour:

For 2 weeks I had been adding stuff to this page, and the download got uncomfortably long.  (Thanks to all for not complaining.)  At our last hotel on the tour, I had a high speed network connection and took the opportunity to split it up into separate pages.   There are navigator links below and scattered around, organized by city.   Lots of photos within.  For more photos and some more great blog, check out Tony's website - at http://www.tonylevin.com

Most fun part of the tour:  We opened each show with an a capella, traditional Barbershop Quartet.  With many of the gigs in large, loud rock club venues, this show opener invariably caught people by surprise.  We had no idea going in how non-English-speaking audiences would react, but amazingly they pretty much all got it.  Even in Russia, at least 50% of the audience knew enough English to follow along.  They all quickly caught on that it's a joke, and that we were there to have a good time - especially when we sang "... you may take photos" whipped out cameras to take pictures of the crowd.

The concerts were all in 600-1500 seat venues, and near or completely sold out.  The expected technical setup problems were all licked by perseverance and with help from good local stage and sound crews.  The performances had the expected rough edges, but only the band knows that.  The gigs were all exhilarating and the audiences enthusiastic and passionate.   Can't wait to do it at home.

Tour Diary

10/01 Not actually on the road yet, but the tour is officially launched.  The Tony Levin Band did a warm-up concert in Kingston at the Keegan Ales Brewery, opening for the Jim Weider Band.  Lots of new music but overall it went real well.  Physically, Keegan's is not the most comfortable place to play, but for spirit, good vibes and a generous welcome from the owner (Tommy Keegan), it tops the list.  It's definitely an 'up close and personal' experience.  I've played there several times, but I don't remember ever seeing the place so full.  We're talkin' crowded, here! I'm sayin' it was packed solid! The audience had to take turns breathing! Getting out to the men's room? Forget it! Pee your pants, or wait until Sunday morning. I only got off one audience shot, but you can see people crammed into every available spot.  Woof!

Where's Waldo?

9/15  Getting ready to start rehearsals with the Tony Levin Band.  It's Tony's previous quartet - with Jesse Gress, Larry Fast and Jerry Marotta  - with me added doing piano and organ.  We've got a nice European tour coming up in October, 1-2 weeks of one nighters mostly in Italy and Switzerland.  Really interesting though, the promoter has just added dates in Moscow and St. Petersburg.  (The real ones, not Idaho and Florida.)  That'll be my first time in Russia.  We won't have much free time there, but I'll make good use of whatever's we get.  Do they get snow there in October?  Southern Italy to Red Square in a week;  How do you pack clothes for a trip like that?  At least I don't have to bring wine and vodka.
Just learned we're playing the B2 Club in Moscow.  If you need directions, check out their website!  (If you can read any of it, let me know.)  http://www.b2club.ru/index.html
